Customer Demand Exhausts Funds for Water Authority’s Turf Replacement Program

After a successful run of more than two years, the San Diego County Water Authority’s turf replacement incentive program has stopped accepting applications because grant funds for the initiative will be exhausted by pending rebate requests. Launched in December 2012, the WaterSmart Turf Replacement Program will directly account for the replacement of more than 1 million square feet of water-intensive turf grass with low-water-use landscapes across the region.

Spring arrives today. At this time of year, homeowners begin preparing for summer by planting flowers and fertilizing lawns. Traditionally, the San Diego County Water Authority issues a reminder as spring arrives that we live in a desert where water conservation is a way of life. Now is also the time to begin water conservation efforts in preparation for more daylight and warmer weather. But this summer will require an even greater effort than in the past to conserve water.

Water Authority board approves $1.48 billion budget for fiscal years 2008 and 2009

The San Diego County Water Authority board of directors today approved a $1.48 billion budget for fiscal years 2008 and 2009 that funds the agency’s operations and capital improvements, a 10.4 percent increase over the prior two-year budget.

Water Authority and Imperial Irrigation District settle arbitration over socioeconomic impacts from water transfer


The San Diego County Water Authority board of directors has accepted an offer by the Imperial Irrigation District to settle all disputes over the mitigation of third-party socio-economic impacts related to the IID-Water Authority water transfer. Based on this settlement, the parties have agreed to dismiss the arbitration proceeding that had been pending before three retired judges and avoid future arbitrations related to socioeconomic impacts and related mitigation.

All-American Canal Lining Project to Proceed

The U. S. Ninth Circuit Federal Court of Appeals in San Francisco has dismissed the most significant challenge to the lining of the All-American Canal and has lifted the court-imposed injunction that halted construction last August. The ruling, issued April 6, allows the Imperial Irrigation District to commence work on the project and conserve water lost by seepage in the existing earthen canal.

Judge Upholds Landmark 2003 Colorado River Accord

Sacramento Superior Court Judge Lloyd G. Connelly on Tuesday validated the 2003 Colorado River Quantification Settlement Agreement and rejected all of the remaining legal challenges to the landmark accord. The ruling secures a key component of water supply for the San Diego County Water Authority, which will receive 180,000 acre-feet of water this year as result of the QSA and related projects.

For California, Connelly’s decision provides certainty about access to its basic annual apportionment of 4.4 million acre-feet of water from the Colorado River.

Water Authority board approves landmark canal lining construction agreements

The San Diego County Water Authority board of directors today unanimously approved construction and financing agreements between the Water Authority, the Imperial Irrigation District and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for construction the All-American Canal Lining Project. The action follows the unanimous approval of the agreements Tuesday by the IID board of directors.
