Water Authority Responds to State Water Boards Adopted Water-Use Regulations

Low Initial Allocation for State Water Project Deliveries Reinforces Need for Conservation

The San Diego County Water Authority said the state Department of Water Resources' announcement Monday of a low initial allocation of water deliveries to the State Water Project (SWP) was expected due to continuing dry conditions this fall and serves as the latest reminder of the region's need to increase voluntary water conservation.

Water Authority launches 20gallonchallenge.com to support conservation campaign

The San Diego County Water Authority today launched www.20gallonchallenge.com, a Web site dedicated to supporting the region's "20-Gallon Challenge" voluntary water conservation initiative. The Water Authority, in collaboration with its 24 member retail water agencies, created the Web site to help educate residents, businesses and public agencies about the urgent need to save water and what they can do to help meet the campaign's goal of reducing the region's water use by 20 gallons of water a day per person.

Governor’s Drought Declaration Underscores Urgent Call for Water Conservation

Officials from the San Diego County Water Authority said today that Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's drought declaration sends a "loud and clear" signal to the region's residents and businesses that the state's water supply conditions are deteriorating and that all California residents must increase their water conservation practices.

Water Authority Urges Region Not to Spring Into Increased Landscape Watering

Although spring has arrived with its warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours, the San Diego County Water Authority reminds residents and businesses to continue practicing water conservation and following local water use restrictions.

In addition, the Water Authority is urging residents and businesses to turn off their irrigation systems this week in anticipation of a storm forecast to hit the region Wednesday and Thursday.

County residents support drought-tolerant, California-friendly landscapes

The newest public opinion survey conducted for the San Diego County Water Authority shows that increasing numbers of San Diego County residents are ready for drought-tolerant landscapes for their homes. In addition, respondents generally felt that California-friendly landscapes were easier to maintain, no more costly and just as attractive as more traditional landscaping – important views that Water Authority officials said will help facilitate new conservation programs.

Dry Conditions Highlight the Value of Water as Summer Nears

As temperatures soared to summer-like highs across the San Diego region on Thursday, the California Department of Water Resources’ final survey of the spring confirmed significantly below-average water content  in the snowpack that provides about one-third of the water supplies for the San Diego County Water Authority. Runoff in the Colorado River Basin, the region’s other major imported water source, also is projected to be far below average for the second consecutive year despite April storms that boosted snow levels in the Rocky Mountains.

Fall’s Cool Temperatures and Shorter Days Mean Less Outdoor Watering

The fall season brings cooler temperatures and shorter daylight hours. It also means lawns and gardens require less water.

As part of its ongoing campaign to reduce water use in the region, the San Diego County Water Authority and its 24 member agencies are urging residents, businesses and public agencies, as well as gardeners and landscape contractors, to begin reducing the frequency and duration of watering times for residential and commercial irrigation systems.
