The San Diego County Water Authority board of directors today took another step toward the development of the region’s first large-scale seawater desalination project. The approval of a term sheet with Poseidon Resources Corporation could lead to the development of the largest desalination project in the Western Hemisphere.
The San Diego County Water Authority urges residents and businesses to shut off their irrigation systems and keep them off for at least the next week.
Two more rainstorms are forecast to hit the region starting tonight through Sunday. The ground is still saturated in most areas following record rainfall on Monday.
If all the sprinklers in the region were shut off for just a week, as much as 2,000 acre-feet of water could be conserved, or enough to meet the annual needs of 4,000 average households.
The San Diego County Water Authority will drain and inspect two Second Aqueduct untreated water pipelines November 10 to 21 as part of its Aqueduct Protection Program.
The pipelines scheduled for inspection provide untreated water to treatment plants operated by City of San Diego and Sweetwater Authority (National City/Chula Vista/Bonita) water agencies. During the shut down the agencies will use local water supplies held in reserve. Business and residential water customers should not be impacted by the shut down.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today recognized the San Diego County Water Authority with a 2019 WaterSense Excellence Award for advancing water efficiency through its Qualified Water Efficient Landscape program, known as QWEL. The San Diego County Water Authority board of directors today approved actions to expand its water treatment policies and to solicit proposals for design, construction and operation of additional treatment plant capacity in the San Diego region. Today’s actions were taken as part of the board’s ongoing effort to diversify and improve the reliability of the Authority’s water resources.
The San Diego County Water Authority board of directors today approved the Quantification Settlement Agreement (QSA) term sheet that includes revisions to the 1998 Imperial Irrigation District – San Diego County Water Authority water transfer agreement. The water transfer agreement will result in a new, more reliable and diversified imported water supply for San Diego with the delivery from IID of one million acre-feet of water to San Diego over the first 15 years of the 75-year agreement.

San Diego County residents strongly support efforts to continue improving water supply reliability and they largely trust local water agencies to do that work, according to a regional public opinion survey released today by the San Diego County Water Authority. An overwhelming majority (94%) of respondents favor expanding the use of recycled water for agriculture and irrigation, and 79% support purifying wastewater to drinking water standards with advanced treatment technologies.
