The San Diego County Water Authority’s Board of Directors today adopted a $1.7 billion budget for fiscal years 2020 and 2021. The new budget is up 5 percent from the current two-year budget, due largely to increasing costs for water supply, supply reliability and infrastructure improvements. Following a public hearing, the Board also approved an increase in wholesale water rates for calendar year 2020. Although the Water Authority’s budget spans two fiscal years, the agency sets rates annually to more effectively manage changing conditions. Rates and charges for member agencies will increase by 4.3 percent for treated water and 4.8 […]
The San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors approved the development and implementation of a Conservation Awareness Information Campaign at the regularly scheduled meeting today. The campaign will be designed to provide information on water conservation practices, while addressing the public perception that San Diego’s water supply may be threatened due to the lack of local rainfall.
The San Diego County Water Authority Friday released details of a proposed restructured water transfer agreement with the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) that directly responds to concerns raised in Imperial Valley since the historic accord was signed in April 1998. The restructuring of the deal's first 15 years, officials say, amounts to a monumental step forward in resolving all outstanding issues.
The San Diego County Water Authority and the City of San Diego today announced the completion of an exhibit about the region’s critical and complex water resources that is on permanent display at the Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park. The theme is “Water Supply Reliability for the 21st Century: Innovation and Conservation,” underscoring the countywide priorities of investing in water supply reliability while making the most of the region’s water resources. The exhibit replaces an earlier version that debuted about a decade ago. The exhibit includes information about the Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant, including a reverse-osmosis filter […]
The San Diego County Water Authority has hired the executive search firm William Avery & Associates to manage the recruitment and selection of the agency’s next general manager. The hiring process will include outreach to civic, business, and community stakeholders to help guide the Board’s assessment […]
The development of drought-resilient water resources and a sustained emphasis on water-use efficiency mean that San Diego County will continue to have a safe and reliable water supply for decades, according to the San Diego County Water Authority’s draft 2015 Urban Water Management Plan. The draft plan – known as the 2015 UWMP based on when the updating process began – was released today for public review, starting a public comment period that will include a public hearing on May 26 during the regular meeting of the Water Authority Board of Directors. The Board will consider adoption of the plan […]
The San Diego County Water Authority’s Acting General Manager today recommended to the Board of Directors a $1.7 billion budget for fiscal years 2020 and 2021, up 5 percent from the current two-year budget, due largely to increasing costs for water supply, supply reliability and infrastructure improvements. Water Authority staff also proposed increasing rates and charges for member agencies by 4.3 percent for treated water and 4.8 percent for untreated water in calendar year 2020, attributable to rate increases by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, continued investments in supply reliability, and reduced water sales that lower demand and […]

The California Assembly Committee on Natural Resources yesterday passed Assembly Bill 1561, which will require new water efficiency standards on all residential clothes washers. The bill, authored by Assembly member Dave Kelley (R-Idyllwild) and sponsored by the San Diego County Water Authority, would establish water standards that benefit both the state and consumers.
The San Diego County Water Authority has completed a second round of lab tests on samples of its treated water supply and found no presence of coliform bacteria. Samples from the Authority’s water supplier, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, also continue to test negative, as do samples from member agencies of the Authority that deliver water directly to the public.
San Diego regional water quality regulators today issued a permit for the installation of new, technologically advanced and environmentally sensitive seawater intake and discharge facilities at the Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant. The plant – and the new permit – support Gov. Gavin Newsom’s April 29 executive order for California “to think differently and act boldly by developing a comprehensive strategy to build a climate-resilient water system.” Under the new National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, the Carlsbad plant will continue producing about 50 million gallons a day of high-quality, drought-proof drinking water for the region as Poseidon […]
