The San Diego County Water Authority today reinstated its synthetic turf incentive program after a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) report that concluded that young children are not at risk from exposure to lead in newer synthetic turf fields.

Point-of-purchase vouchers currently offered by the San Diego County Water Authority and its member agencies to reduce out-of-pocket cost when purchasing water-efficient equipment will only be honored until June 30. Beginning July 1, customers will use rebate applications to receive incentive discounts.
The change applies to single-family, multifamily, commercial, industrial, and institutional properties that purchase authorized indoor water-saving products, ranging from toilets and urinals to HVAC system pH conductivity controllers and clothes washers.
After a successful run of more than two years, the San Diego County Water Authority’s turf replacement incentive program has stopped accepting applications because grant funds for the initiative will be exhausted by pending rebate requests. Launched in December 2012, the WaterSmart Turf Replacement Program will directly account for the replacement of more than 1 million square feet of water-intensive turf grass with low-water-use landscapes across the region.
Faced with significant cuts in water supplies from Northern California for the foreseeable future and diminishing levels of water storage around California, the San Diego County Water Authority on Monday will launch its largest advertising and marketing campaign to promote increased voluntary water conservation since the early 1990s.
Seeking to provide consistency in how its 24 retail member agencies respond to times of limited water supplies, the San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors approved releasing a draft model drought response ordinance. The Water Authority’s member agencies will be asked to use the model ordinance to update their own ordinances to help provide consistency in drought response levels and water conservation requirements throughout the region.
Faced with court-ordered cutbacks in water deliveries from Northern California and lingering effects of dry conditions locally and around the West, the San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors today approved spending approximately $1.8 million to implement a comprehensive advertising and marketing campaign to promote voluntary water conservation this year and into next spring. äóÂ

The San Diego County Water Authority is launching the 2015 update of its Urban Water Management Plan, which includes a forecast of water demands and a detailed evaluation of the supplies necessary to meet those demands over at least two decades for both normal and dry conditions.
Spring arrives today. At this time of year, homeowners begin preparing for summer by planting flowers and fertilizing lawns. Traditionally, the San Diego County Water Authority issues a reminder as spring arrives that we live in a desert where water conservation is a way of life. Now is also the time to begin water conservation efforts in preparation for more daylight and warmer weather. But this summer will require an even greater effort than in the past to conserve water.
