Low Initial Allocation for State Water Project Deliveries Reinforces Need for Conservation

The San Diego County Water Authority said the state Department of Water Resources' announcement Monday of a low initial allocation of water deliveries to the State Water Project (SWP) was expected due to continuing dry conditions this fall and serves as the latest reminder of the region's need to increase voluntary water conservation.

Water Authority Explores Major Hydropower Project at San Vicente Reservoir

The San Diego County Water Authority, in partnership with the city of San Diego, is preparing to assess the potential for a major hydroelectric power project at San Vicente Reservoir to boost the region’s local energy supply now that the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station is permanently offline.

The proposed pumped storage project could generate up to 500 megawatts, enough power for approximately 325,000 homes. It would require the construction of a small reservoir in the hills above San Vicente Reservoir, along with other facilities.

Water Service Restored to Ramona; Do-Not-Drink Order Remains in Effect

Water service has been restored to all residential and commercial meters in the Ramona Municipal Water District, but the community remains under a state Department of Public Health “do not drink” order.

Water testing is currently being conducted throughout the Ramona water system to meet public health requirements.  The state Department of Public Health requires two consecutive clean tests in a 48-hour period before the do-not-drink order can be lifted.

Water Authority launches 20gallonchallenge.com to support conservation campaign

The San Diego County Water Authority today launched www.20gallonchallenge.com, a Web site dedicated to supporting the region's "20-Gallon Challenge" voluntary water conservation initiative. The Water Authority, in collaboration with its 24 member retail water agencies, created the Web site to help educate residents, businesses and public agencies about the urgent need to save water and what they can do to help meet the campaign's goal of reducing the region's water use by 20 gallons of water a day per person.

Water Authority Board Approves Filing a Lawsuit Against Metropolitan Water District Challenging Illegal Water Rates

   The San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors today unanimously approved filing suit against the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California challenging the 2011 and 2012 water rates that MWD adopted in April.

Federal judge orders massive cut in water supply deliveries from the Bay Delta

Today in Fresno, U. S. District Court Judge Oliver W. Wanger announced a series of severe restrictions on the operations of the massive pumps that supply water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to 25 million Californians (about two-thirds of all Californians), including 3 million residents of San Diego County, to protect threatened fish in the Bay-Delta.

New Landscape Transformation Program Increases Incentives in San Diego County

Residents in San Diego County now can receive $2.75 per square foot for replacing turf with sustainable landscaping features as part of a new Landscape Transformation Program launched today across Southern California.
