Water Authority Board Approves San Vicente Dam Raise of 117 Feet

The San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors today certified the enironmental impact report to raise San Vicente Dam by 117 feet. The $568 million project, to be built on top of the existing San Vicente Dam in Lakeside, will expand the reservoir to hold an additional 52,000 acre-feet of water for use during emergencies and another 100,000 acre-feet of water to supplement imported supplies during dry periods.

With the potential for water supply reductions increasing with every dry day in the Sierra Nevada, the San Diego County Water Authority and its member agencies have partnered with the local chapter of the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association to help residents and businesses save water and money during national Fix a Leak Week, March 16-22.

Water Authority Board approves model drought response conservation ordinance

Seeking to provide consistency in how its 24 retail member agencies respond to times of limited water supplies, the San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors approved releasing a draft model drought response ordinance. The Water Authority’s member agencies will be asked to use the model ordinance to update their own ordinances to help provide consistency in drought response levels and water conservation requirements throughout the region.

Water Authority to launch major advertising campaign to boost voluntary conservation

Faced with court-ordered cutbacks in water deliveries from Northern California and lingering effects of dry conditions locally and around the West, the San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors today approved spending approximately $1.8 million to implement a comprehensive advertising and marketing campaign to promote voluntary water conservation this year and into next spring. äóÂ

Water Authority Begins Update of Region’s Long-Term Water Management Strategy

The San Diego County Water Authority is launching the 2015 update of its Urban Water Management Plan, which includes a forecast of water demands and a detailed evaluation of the supplies necessary to meet those demands over at least two decades for both normal and dry conditions.

Water Authority urges shutoff of irrigation systems during rainstorms

The San Diego County Water Authority is urging residents and businesses to help the region conserve water by keeping their outdoor watering systems turned off as several storms move through the region. The Water Authority also urges those still running irrigation systems on normal schedules to turn them off immediately.

National Weather Service forecasters predict the combined storms through the weekend could deliver up to 1.3 inches of rain in coastal and inland areas and 2.5 inches of rain and possibly snow to mountain areas.

Water Authority officials say residents and businesses that received measureable amounts of rain from today’s unexpected storm may be able to keep their landscape watering systems off for several days to a week, especially if cooler temperatures prevail.
