2020 Urban Water Management Plan Launched

In January 2020, the Water Authority Board of Directors authorized the development of the 2020 Urban Water Management Plan which documents the region’s approach to ensuring a safe and reliable water supply. Urban water suppliers in California are required to adopt and submit an Urban Water Management Plan every five years. The 2020 plan includes six main elements: baseline demand forecast, water-use efficiency savings, water supplies, supply reliability assessment, scenario planning, and shortage contingency analysis. The Water Authority started by coordinating with its 24 member agencies to create a long-range baseline water demand forecast. The 2020 UWMP will be the road map to continue San Diego’s successful management of regional water supplies through water supply diversification. The Water Authority’s 2020 UWMP must be submitted to the California Department of Water Resources by July 1, 2021.

“This planning process is a critical part of meeting the long-range water supply needs of the San Diego region for both normal and dry year conditions.”
