Construction Starts on Critical Structure in Mission Trails Regional Park

Crews broke ground on a new 5-million-gallon underground reservoir in Mission Trails Regional Park in April 2020. The “flow regulatory structure” includes the new reservoir, a flow-control facility and pipeline interconnections to upgrade the system that delivers water to treatment plants serving central and southern San Diego County. The project is expected to be complete in early 2022; it stayed on schedule despite work restrictions during the pandemic due to its “essential” project status. The Water Authority successfully carried out habitat management activities to safely and humanely relocate species such as mice and toads in the area, and the agency worked with park rangers to manage nearby trail access for the safety of park users.

“Environmental stewardship is paramount to the Water Authority, and we always aim to minimize impacts to the surrounding land and communities while we improve regional water infrastructure.”
