2020 Annual Report
Innovation and
Business Services
The Water Authority's Asset Management team uses innovative technologies like robotic inspection tools within sections of large-diameter pipeline throughout the region to assess pipeline structure and identify where proactive repairs might be needed.
Security, Data Access Improved
The information services team executed several major projects that improved security and access to critical data. For instance, enhanced VPN security and new multi-factor authentication on all devices bolster defenses. Microsoft Remote Desktop Services, a new means of remote working, was also deployed for a pilot project by several members of staff. This service allows staff to remotely access customized desktops that reside in the datacenter.
The information services, web development and business application teams also collaborated with the Water Resources and Finance departments and a third-party vendor to design a new water billing system and conduct side-by-side testing with the legacy system. The Data Archival and Invoicing System (DAIS) application is an open source solution developed in a Microsoft Azure's cloud computing platform. The application archives Water Resources-related planning information, and it is used to generate the Water Authority's monthly member agency water sales invoices. It is equipped with an intuitive, user-friendly interface, member agency portal, and robust reporting tools. DAIS has the functionality to interface with Microsoft Power BI services that allow for interactive visualizations to create reports and dashboards. In addition, the information services team conducted a large-scale upgrade and redesign of the PeopleSoft ERP system interfaces to modernize the look and feel and provide functional improvements. Successful long-term planning has helped the Water Authority remain compliant and flexible to meet regulatory challenges and provide a stable foundation for its business application systems.
